Patna: In a major relief for sugarcane farmers, the Bihar state government has announced an increase in sugarcane prices for the new year. The decision was made following a meeting chaired by Sugarcane Industry Minister Sanjay Kumar, along with Additional Chief Secretary K. Senthil Kumar and all sugar mill owners of the state on Thursday.
After discussions, mill owners agreed to raise sugarcane rates by ₹15–20 per quintal, effective from the 2025-26 crushing season, ensuring better returns for farmers.
Revised Sugarcane Prices for 2025-26
The new rates for sugarcane are as follows:
- Superior Grade: ₹390 per quintal (previously ₹365)
- Normal Grade: ₹370 per quintal (previously ₹345)
- Inferior Grade: ₹340 per quintal (previously ₹310)
In addition, the extra ₹10 per quintal bonus, announced during the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Pragati Yatra, will continue for all sugarcane categories, providing further financial support to farmers.
Government Commitment to Farmer Welfare
Speaking at the meeting, Minister Sanjay Kumar emphasized that the state government is committed to the upliftment and welfare of farmers. “Since the formation of the new government under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, focused efforts have been made to ensure farmers receive fair prices for their produce,” he said.
The rate increase came after three rounds of discussions with mill owners to address the long-standing demand of farmers for higher sugarcane prices.
Meeting Attendees
The meeting was attended by Sugarcane Commissioner Anil Kumar Jha, Joint Sugarcane Commissioner Jai Prakash Narayan Singh, and owners of all sugar mills across Bihar.
This price hike is expected to significantly boost the income of sugarcane farmers in Bihar, ensuring sustainability and growth in the sugarcane sector while supporting the state’s agricultural economy.
