Bihar’s Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana Benefits 22.72 Lakh Girls, ₹1,136 Crore Disbursed in 19 Years

₹5,000 financial assistance for BPL families’ daughters; DBT transfers aim to reduce marriage burden and prevent child marriage across Bihar.

Patna: The Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana in Bihar has supported more than 22,72,035 girls over the past 19 years, providing financial assistance for marriage to families living below the poverty line. Under the scheme, a total of ₹1,136.01 crore has been transferred directly to beneficiaries through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

The initiative continues to witness a steady rise in the number of beneficiaries each year.

Steady Growth in Beneficiaries Over the Years

According to the Social Welfare Department:

  • In 2007–08, around 20,000 beneficiaries received assistance.
  • By 2022–23, the number increased significantly to 2,31,723 beneficiaries, with ₹115.86 crore disbursed.
  • In 2023–24, 1,57,868 beneficiaries received benefits.
  • In 2024–25, the number stood at 65,535 beneficiaries.
  • In 2025–26, 39,435 beneficiaries have received assistance so far.

For the upcoming payment cycle, the government has set a target to provide ₹3.84 crore to 7,694 beneficiaries.

Financial Assistance for Poor Families

Under the scheme, daughters from:

  • Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, and
  • Families with annual income below ₹60,000,

are provided a ₹5,000 financial grant at the time of marriage.

The amount is directly transferred to the beneficiary’s bank account through the DBT system via e-Suvidha, ensuring transparency and timely disbursal.

Eligibility Criteria for Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana

To avail benefits under the scheme:

  • The bride must be at least 18 years old.
  • The groom must be at least 21 years old.
  • The family must meet income eligibility conditions.

Objectives: Reducing Financial Burden and Preventing Child Marriage

The primary objectives of the Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana are:

  • To reduce the financial burden on economically weaker families during marriage.
  • To encourage marriage registration.
  • To prevent child marriage.
  • To promote social security and dignity for girls from poor households.

Strengthening Social Welfare in Bihar

The consistent rise in beneficiaries highlights the Bihar government’s commitment to women empowerment, social security, and financial inclusion. Through direct transfers and transparent processes, the scheme aims to provide timely support to underprivileged families while reinforcing legal marriage norms and social reforms.
