Patna, Bihar: In a major push for rural tourism and economic development in Bihar, Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Samrat Chaudhary announced the administrative approval of ₹24.28 crore for the modernization and development of the Sonpur Mela site in Saran district. The funding falls under the Central Financial Assistance Scheme (CBDD) of the Swadesh Darshan Scheme 2.0, which aims to transform key tourist sites across India into sustainable and globally attractive destinations.
Smart and Eco-Friendly Fair Experience Ahead
As part of the approved plan, the Sonpur Mela will undergo a comprehensive overhaul, featuring digital and green infrastructure to enhance the experience for both domestic and international tourists.
Key initiatives include–
- Construction of a grand entrance gate
- Widening of roads and market area development
- Improved connectivity to the nearby ghats
- Dedicated parking zones and shuttle services
In addition, the site will implement several green initiatives, such as-
- Plastic-free fair zones
- Efficient waste management systems
- Use of solar energy
- Environmental awareness campaigns
- Under its digital transformation goals, the plan will introduce:
- A dedicated mobile app for the fair
- Cashless payment facilities
- Virtual darshan options for remote visitors
- Smart parking systems
Tourism, Employment, and Revenue to Get a Boost
Speaking to the press, Mr. Chaudhary stated, “The government is committed to developing Sonpur Mela not only as a major national attraction but also as a global tourism hub. This project will boost employment, tourism, and revenue generation in the region.”
He added that the initiative is expected to significantly increase the number of tourists visiting the Mela annually, contributing to local livelihoods and rural economic growth.
Cultural Heritage Meets Modern Infrastructure
Held every year on Kartik Purnima (this year falling on November 5, 2025), the Sonpur Mela is celebrated at the confluence of the Ganga and Gandak rivers and is renowned as Asia’s largest animal fair. Historically famous for the trade of elephants, horses, cattle, and other livestock, the fair has evolved into a cultural and spiritual fest, attracting thousands from across India and abroad.
The modernization plan seeks to retain the traditional essence of the fair while integrating modern amenities, ensuring an elevated yet culturally rooted experience for visitors.
