New Delhi: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), a Fortune Global 500 and Maharatna public sector undertaking, has announced the appointment of Sanjay Khanna as its new Chairman and Managing Director (CMD). The decision was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) following the recommendation of the Search-cum-Selection Committee under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
Khanna, currently serving as Director (Refineries) at BPCL, will assume full charge as CMD immediately and will hold office until May 31, 2029, or until further orders.
Veteran Leader with Extensive Refinery Experience
With over three decades of experience in refinery operations and technical services, Sanjay Khanna brings a wealth of expertise to BPCL. His appointment is expected to strengthen the company’s strategic focus on:
- Value-added petroleum products
- Petrochemical integration
- Operational efficiency
- Long-term energy security
Khanna is a Chemical Engineering graduate from NIT Tiruchirappalli and holds a postgraduate degree in Finance Management from the University of Mumbai. He has played a pivotal role in expanding BPCL’s refining and petrochemical capabilities, including successfully commissioning the Propylene Derivative Petrochemical Project (PDPP) at Kochi despite pandemic-related challenges.

Prior to becoming CMD, Khanna headed BPCL’s Mumbai and Kochi refineries and served as Executive Director at Kochi. Over the years, he has overseen major projects across BPCL’s refineries, leading to:
- Installation of new process units
- Improved operational efficiency
- Higher value realization
- Technological advancement
Khanna also holds influential positions across the energy sector, including:
- Board member of Bharat Petro Resources Limited, Petronet LNG Limited, and Ratnagiri Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited
- Chairperson of the Technical Committee for Petroleum Refineries under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas

The internal elevation of Sanjay Khanna as CMD is seen as a strategic move to ensure continuity in leadership, particularly as BPCL focuses on:
