Bina, Madhya Pradesh: In a major step towards India’s clean energy future, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has commissioned its first and one of the country’s largest green hydrogen plants at the Bina Refinery. This strategic initiative reinforces BPCL’s commitment to the National Green Hydrogen Mission and India’s ambitious Net Zero emissions target by 2070.
The 5 MW green hydrogen facility was officially inaugurated by Shri G. Krishnakumar, Chairman and Managing Director of BPCL. Developed in a record time of just 15 months, the plant sets new industry standards in both cost-efficiency and project execution speed among India’s public sector oil marketing companies.
A Leap Toward Decarbonization
With a production capacity exceeding 780 tonnes of green hydrogen per annum, the facility is expected to cut carbon emissions by approximately 9,000 tonnes annually. This aligns directly with BPCL’s roadmap to achieve Net Zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2040, significantly contributing to India’s decarbonization journey.
Equipped with two state-of-the-art electrolysers, each with a capacity of 500 Nm³/hr, the plant has been engineered to maximize energy efficiency while minimizing environmental impact. The use of renewable power for hydrogen production ensures that the facility operates with zero greenhouse gas emissions, a vital component in India’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

Leadership Speaks
Speaking at the inauguration, G. Krishnakumar highlighted the project’s national significance – “The commissioning of this green hydrogen plant is a landmark moment for BPCL and for India’s energy sector. It not only underscores our commitment to sustainability and innovation but also contributes meaningfully to the nation’s climate goals under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. We are proud to lead this transition towards a cleaner, greener energy future.”
Supporting India’s Green Hydrogen Mission
India launched its National Green Hydrogen Mission to position itself as a global hub for green hydrogen production, targeting 5 MMT of annual production by 2030. BPCL’s Bina facility is among the earliest large-scale efforts from the public sector, demonstrating how state-run enterprises can take the lead in climate action.
Looking Ahead
The successful commissioning of this facility is not just a milestone for BPCL, but a template for future green hydrogen infrastructure across India. As other refineries and energy firms begin integrating green hydrogen into their operations, the Bina plant stands as a symbol of what public-private collaboration, strategic planning, and technological innovation can achieve.
