A very inspirational book titled ‘A Life Uncommon – B.S. Bedi’ was launched at the police headquarters in Lucknow. The booked was unveiled by DGP UP Mukul Goel, former DGP SVM Tripathi and Preeti Singh.
Written by Preeti Singh, who is also former IPS officer Dr. BS Bedi’s daughter, the book is based on his life’s journey. It also highlights his personal work experiences during his postings at different districts in UP as well as the challenges faced as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Jalandhar Range in 1985 during the height of militancy in Punjab.
Dr. B. S. Bedi Former D.G.P. belongs to the 1961 batch of IPS of UP cadre. He was born at Daska in Sialkot district of present Pakistan. After partition the family settled at Sirhind in Punjab, India. He was a good student and received several academic awards during his school and college days. His keen interest in academics and passion for English literature served as a base for the Civil Services preparation. Before his selection into the I.P.S., he taught at a Postgraduate college for nearly three years.
During his illustrious career as a police officer, he was handpicked for a series of important and challenging postings. Dr. Bedi proved his mettle as an outstanding, fearless and honest officer, who due to his balanced and effective style of policing, was respected both in the political as well as bureaucratic circles. He earned deep respect of his police force as well as the public wherever he served.
Considered one of the most dynamic and legendary I.P.S. officers of his time, he was selected for two Inter State deputations‐ first as D.I.G. Jalandhar Range in 1985 during the height of militancy in Punjab, and then in 1992 as D.G.P. Jammu and Kashmir where he was given the responsibility of tackling the grave situation arising out of uncontrolled militant activities. After his police career Dr. Bedi served as Member, U.P. Public Service Commission and thereafter returned to the world of academics. He has fulfilled his long cherished dream of research in English Literature that has earned him a Ph.D. degree followed by the coveted D. Litt degree.
The he book narrates Bedi’s experience of tackling the grave situation arising out of uncontrolled militant activities as Director General of Police (DGP), Jammu and Kashmir.
The author shared her journey of compiling her father’s personal and professional experiences with the audience followed by reading some passages from the book. She said BS Bedi belongs to the 1961 batch of the IPS and served with great distinction in various challenging postings within and outside Uttar Pradesh.
