In a significant development in the ongoing demand for justice in the suicide case of senior IPS officer Mr. Y. Puran Kumar, the Haryana government has taken key administrative actions, leading the Nyay Sangharsh Morcha to shift its focus toward pressuring the Chandigarh administration.
The movement, spearheaded by activists, legal advocates, and civil society organizations, saw renewed momentum after the removal of the DGP and Superintendent of Police, as initially demanded by protestors.
Key Administrative Changes Prompt Protest Strategy Shift
According to representatives of the Nyay Sangharsh Morcha, the Haryana government’s action has met initial demands, prompting the organization to redirect its campaign efforts toward seeking accountability from the Chandigarh police.
“The Haryana government has fulfilled our key demands. The focus now is on ensuring the Chandigarh administration takes its responsibilities seriously,” stated Mr. Gurmel Dhabi, a core member of the Morcha.
From Mahapanchayat to March: Organized, Peaceful Advocacy for Justice
The Morcha had earlier issued a 48-hour ultimatum during a Mahapanchayat at Guru Ravidas Temple, Sector 20, demanding the arrest of the DGP and former SP of Rohtak. Following successful administrative action on Tuesday, the group has announced a peaceful foot march from Sector 17 to the Punjab Raj Bhavan.
Mr. Jayanarayan, retired Associate Professor and Chairman of the Justice Committee, confirmed that the memorandum will be submitted to Mr. Gulabchand Kataria, Punjab Governor and Administrator of Chandigarh.
“Our intent remains peaceful. We are committed to seeking justice within the bounds of law and constitutional rights,” he emphasized.
Legal Cell Maintains Pressure Amid Clarifications
Mr. Ravi Gautam, Vice President of the Legal Cell of the Justice Front, reiterated that no consensus has been reached regarding the funeral arrangements of Mr. Puran Kumar, contradicting some reports suggesting agreement.
“Any such claims of family consent or agreement with the administration are mistaken or miscommunicated,” he clarified.
Ongoing Dialogue with the Family and Protest Coordination
A follow-up meeting at the Valmiki Temple in Sector 24 allowed protest leaders to speak directly with Mr. Puran Kumar’s family. The Justice Struggle Committee has appealed for all demonstrations to continue with peace, unity, and dignity, while demanding judicial intervention and administrative accountability in the case.
A Larger Call for Bureaucratic Accountability and Transparency
This case has highlighted rising public demand for transparency and accountability within the bureaucratic framework. The Haryana government’s prompt response has been acknowledged, but protestors now expect Chandigarh authorities to show the same sense of urgency and justice.
The peaceful march and memorandum submission mark a new phase in the movement, balancing public pressure with procedural decorum.
