To deal with the shortage of bureaucrats in the central government, the Narendra Modi government has constituted a four-member committee to find out the reasons for the shortage of IAS and suggest solutions, sources in the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). This committee, headed by former DoPT secretary C. Chandramouli, will soon submit its report to the government.
According to the All India Services (AIS) rules, about 22 per cent of the currently sanctioned strength (6,709) of IAS officers should have been on deputation to the Centre. However, at present, only 6 per cent of the sanctioned posts are centrally deputed officers, according to the DoPT’s 2021 annual report. This means that while there should be 1,451 IAS officers, there are only 445.
