UPSC is yet to get a full time DGP even after 2 months of the Punjab Government sent the panel of 10 IPS officer to the UPSC for the selection of state Police chief.
Inder Preet Sahota continues to hold the charge of acting DGP in the poll bond border state.
The UPSC had been seeking repeated clarification from the state government on some discrepancies in the panel and other issue.
Supreme Court had made it clear that “None of the states shall ever conceive of the idea of appointing any person on the post of director general of police on acting basis, for there is no concept of acting director general of police as per the decision in Prakash Singh’s case.” Till date, there is no clarity as to when the UPSC would convene its meeting for picking up the three most eligible IPS officers for the post to communicate their names to the Punjab government.
There is a possibility that the election commission could appoint former state police head Gupta as the DGP again, till the poll process is over.
Those whose names have been sent to the UPSC include Siddharth Chattopadhyaya (1986-batch), Dinkar Gupta (1987), M K Tiwari (1987), V K Bhawra (1987), Prabodh Kumar (1988), Rohit Choudhary (1988), Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota (1988), Sanjeev Kalra (1989), Parag Jain (1989) and Barjinder Kumar Upp (1991). Among these, five officers are superannuating next year -Tiwari (February 28), Chattopadyaya and Choudhary (March 31), Uppal (May 31) and Sahota (August 30).
