New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has approved the Ministry of Defence’s proposal to procure 97 Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk-1A fighter jets, along with associated equipment, from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The approval was granted on August 19, 2025, marking another significant boost for India’s indigenous aerospace capabilities.
Strengthening India’s Indigenous Fighter Fleet
This marks the second major order for LCA Mk-1A aircraft, following the earlier order of 83 units worth around ₹48,000 crore. With this approval, HAL’s production of the advanced variant will see a significant expansion, further strengthening the Indian Air Force’s frontline fleet.
Advanced Avionics and High Indigenous Content
The LCA Mk-1A comes equipped with advanced avionics, improved radars, and enhanced operational capabilities compared to the initial 40 LCA aircraft already delivered. Notably, the indigenous content in the new Mk-1A fighters will exceed 65 percent, underscoring the government’s commitment to self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
