Nagpur: At the inaugural ceremony of the 79th Batch of Indian Revenue Service (IRS) Officer Trainees at the National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT), Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) K Sanjay Murthy, a retired 1989 batch Indian Administrative Service officer from Himachal Pradesh cadre, encouraged probationers to play a proactive role in India’s inclusive and sustainable development.
Mr Murthy is currently serving as the 15th Comptroller and Auditor General of India since November 2024.
Role of IRS in Nation-Building
Addressing the 180 officer trainees, Murthy congratulated them for joining public service and emphasized the critical contribution of the Income Tax Department in nation-building, noting that it generates a lion’s share of the central government’s revenue.
He praised NADT, its faculty, and staff for exemplary work in capacity building and described the academy as a benchmark for national training institutions in terms of course content, infrastructure, and facilities.

Focus on Positive and Transparent Tax Administration
Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Malathi Sridharan, highlighted the department’s reforms, including the transition to a faceless assessment and appellate regime, shifting focus from coercion to voluntary compliance. She emphasized NADT’s training in preparing officers for senior leadership roles within the Income Tax Department and broader public administration.
