In a strategic move to enhance India’s capabilities in the exploration and development of unconventional hydrocarbon resources, Coal India’s subsidiary, Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

The MoU, which focuses on data sharing and technology transfer, aims to promote collaboration in the areas of Coal Bed Methane (CBM), Shale Gas, and other unconventional energy sources. The agreement was signed in the presence of Dr. Pallavi Jain Govil, Director General, DGH; Mr. Sachiv Kumar, ADG (Development); Mr. Manoj Kumar, CMD, CMPDI; Mr. Shankar Nagachari, Director (T/CRD); Mr. Ajay Kumar, Director (T/P&D and T/RD&T); and Mr. Sanjay Kumar Dubey, GM (TS/PR), along with senior officials from DGH, CMPDI, ONGC, IOCL, CBM operators, and representatives from academic institutions.
The partnership aims to create a robust framework for the exchange of technical expertise, research insights, and geological data, strengthening India’s unconventional energy exploration initiatives. Following the MoU signing, a stakeholder meeting was held where CBM operators and academic representatives emphasized the urgent need for enhanced collaboration to accelerate the development of CBM and other non-conventional hydrocarbon sources.
