Union Minister of Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy will visit Chhattisgarh on April 10 and 11, 2025, to review operations at the Gevra coal mine — the world’s second-largest and India’s largest coal mine. The Gevra mine is operated by South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL).
This high-level visit comes in the wake of a significant achievement for India’s coal sector: crossing the milestone of producing and dispatching 1 billion tonnes of coal. Minister Reddy’s review is aimed at acknowledging this feat and further strategizing for the sector’s growth.
During his visit, the Minister will interact with a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including frontline mine workers who played a key role in reaching the landmark. He is expected to commend their efforts and reinforce the government’s commitment to promoting efficiency, safety, and sustainability in mining operations.
Reddy will also meet with Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai to discuss the future roadmap for coal mining in the state. Key focus areas include enhancing coal production, infrastructure development, and identifying opportunities for sustainable practices in the sector.
The visit highlights the Centre’s continued emphasis on bolstering India’s coal and mining ecosystem, recognizing it as a cornerstone of the country’s energy security and economic progress.
