New Delhi: The Ministry of Coal is set to launch the 13th round of commercial coal mine auctions on August 21, 2025, marking another milestone in India’s ongoing coal sector reforms. The launch event will be held in New Delhi and graced by Union Minister of Coal and Mines, Mr G. Kishan Reddy as the Chief Guest, and Minister of State for Coal and Mines, Mr Satish Chandra Dubey as the Guest of Honour.
Driving Transparency and Self-Reliance in Coal Sector
This new round of auctions reflects the government’s push for transparency, competition, and self-reliance in coal production. Since the commercial coal auction system was introduced in 2020 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it has seen enthusiastic participation from both established and emerging industry players.
The auctions have not only enhanced domestic coal availability, reducing reliance on imports, but also promoted ease of doing business in the sector.
What to Expect in the 13th Round
The 13th auction round will include a fresh set of coal mines, comprising both fully explored and partially explored blocks. This is expected to attract a diverse group of bidders, including:
- Experienced mining companies
- First-time entrants
- Technology-driven and innovative enterprises
The auction will also highlight opportunities in underground coal gasification and surface gasification, which are key to environmentally conscious and future-ready coal utilization.
CMDPA Signing for 11 Mines
In addition to launching new auctions, the event will witness the signing of Coal Mine Development and Production Agreements (CMDPAs) for 11 mines successfully allocated during previous auction rounds. These agreements are essential steps in transitioning from allocation to development and operationalization of the coal mines.
Sectoral Reform and Future Vision
The commercial coal mining model, backed by policy liberalization and investor-friendly terms, is transforming India’s coal sector into a transparent, competitive, and growth-oriented ecosystem. The Ministry of Coal emphasized its commitment to the Viksit Bharat vision, stating that it will continue to drive structural reforms and offer a conducive environment for responsible coal mining.
