New Delhi: In a major push towards water conservation and environmental sustainability, the Ministry of Coal has enabled large-scale utilization of treated mine water through its key public sector undertakings- Coal India Limited (CIL), NLC India Limited (NLCIL), and Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL). These efforts align with national environmental guidelines and promote responsible resource reuse.
These advancements were given by the Union Minister of Coal and Mines Mr G. Kishan Reddy in a written reply in Lok Sabha today.
From Mines to Households and Fields
Treated mine water is being repurposed for drinking, irrigation, and industrial applications across coal and lignite mining areas. The initiative adheres to standards outlined in the Environmental Protection Act, 1986, and the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. It also follows directives issued by the Central and State Pollution Control Boards.
Each PSU has developed its own Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure safe, regulated, and effective use of the treated water. This ensures strict compliance with environmental and health standards across varied applications.
Strict Quality Standards and Health Compliance
For drinking purposes, the treated water undergoes multi-stage processing, including sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. The final output is tested regularly by accredited laboratories under protocols laid out by BIS (IS 10500:2012), Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA), and other applicable norms.
These measures are designed to guarantee water safety and public health while optimizing resource utilization in mining-intensive regions.
Expanding Mine Water Reuse Across India
Coal and lignite PSUs are scaling up treated mine water management efforts across multiple states. Numerous projects are now underway to supply surplus treated water for domestic consumption, irrigation, and industrial use.
This sustainable water model not only supports conservation goals but also improves access to clean water for local communities residing near mining zones.
