Mumbai: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police will on Wednesday, 14 August, file a chargesheet running nearly 5,500 pages against Purushottam Chavan in a high-value government quota housing scam.
Background of the Scam
Chavan, who was arrested in May, is accused of duping at least 20 people of ₹24.78 crore by offering them flats in Mumbai, Thane, and Pune under the Maharashtra government’s housing quota at concessional rates. Police sources said that, after partial refunds to some victims, the net scam amount now stands at around ₹19 crore.
Investigators have recorded statements from 30 to 40 witnesses to bolster the case. The fraud is alleged to have operated for almost a decade, during which Chavan used his political connections and influence to gain victims’ trust before disappearing with their money.
