Leadership Updates: Deepak Gupta Recommended as New CMD of GAIL (India) Limited by PESB

Deepak Gupta, currently Director (Projects) at GAIL, chosen by PESB to lead India’s largest natural gas company; appointment awaits ACC approval.

New Delhi: In a significant development, the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has recommended Mr. Deepak Gupta for the prestigious position of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of GAIL (India) Limited, the country’s largest natural gas company.

Mr. Gupta is presently serving as Director (Projects) at GAIL (India) Limited, where he has been instrumental in leading several major infrastructure and gas pipeline expansion projects across India. His vast experience in project execution and strategic planning within the oil and gas sector made him a leading contender for the top post.

The Selection Process

The PESB conducted interviews to identify a suitable candidate for the CMD post. A total of 12 senior professionals from GAIL and other leading public sector undertakings appeared for the interview.

The candidates who appeared for the interview were:

  4. Mr. Atul Kumar Tripathi, Executive Director (Projects), GAIL (India) Limited
  5. Mr. Anupam Mukhopadhyay, Chief Executive Officer, GAIL (India) Limited
  6. Mr. Kamal Kishore Chatiwal, Managing Director, Indraprastha Gas Limited / Executive Director, GAIL (India) Limited
  7. Mr. Kaipil Kumar Jain, Executive Director (Marketing – Retail LNG), GAIL (India) Limited
  8. Mr. Satish Kumar Sinha, Executive Director (Finance & Accounts), GAIL (India) Limited
  9. Mr. Deepak Gupta, Director (Projects), GAIL (India) Limited
  10. Mr. Atul Gupta, Director (Commercial), Engineers India Limited
  11. Mr. Anuj Jain, Director (Finance), Indian Oil Corporation Limited
  12. Dr. Pudi Hariprasad, Chief Administration Officer (CAO/Treasury and Reconciliation), Railways (Ministry of Railways)

Following a comprehensive evaluation process, the PESB panel recommended Mr. Deepak Gupta for the top leadership position. His appointment will be subject to necessary clearances and approval by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).

Mr. Deepak Gupta has held several key roles within GAIL, contributing significantly to its growth and modernization initiatives. As Director (Projects), he has overseen multiple high-value gas transmission and petrochemical projects, aligning with India’s energy transition and sustainability goals. His leadership is expected to drive GAIL’s continued expansion in natural gas infrastructure, LNG trading, and renewable energy ventures.
