Deforestation in Madhya Pradesh: Forest Area and Tree Count Decline Amid Development Projects

Madhya Pradesh faces ongoing deforestation, particularly in Rajgarh, due to development projects. Despite promises of replanting, tree cutting continues, leading to environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity.
Indian Masterminds Stories

Despite ongoing claims of environmental protection in Madhya Pradesh, a concerning report has revealed that the state’s forest area and tree population are continuing to dwindle. This decline is largely attributed to the indiscriminate cutting of trees under the guise of development projects. While promises are often made to replant trees in place of those cut down for such schemes, these commitments seem to remain largely unfulfilled, with the reality of deforestation becoming increasingly evident.

Decline of Forest Cover in Rajgarh District

Rajgarh district, in particular, has witnessed a significant reduction in its forest cover. The Indian Forest Survey Report (ISFR) for 2024 has confirmed a loss of 0.43 square kilometers (approximately 43 hectares) of forest land in the district. Despite this, the forest department lacks comprehensive data regarding when and where trees were felled, and how the forest area has decreased over time.

Development works such as the construction of dams, medical colleges, new hospital buildings, polytechnic colleges, railway lines, and national highways have been major contributors to this loss. The district covers a total area of 6154 square kilometers, with 278 square kilometers designated as forested land. This means that approximately 4.5% of the district is covered by forests, making the reduction in forest area a matter of significant concern for both the environment and local wildlife.

Deforestation Amid Development

While urbanization and infrastructural development are essential for economic growth, they are often at odds with environmental conservation. In Rajgarh, several key development projects have led to the mass cutting of trees. These include:

  1. Ramganj Mandi to Bhopal Railway Line (2022) – The acquisition of land for this railway line led to the cutting of trees on private land, affecting both farmers and the environment.
  2. Suthaliya Major Irrigation Project (2022) – Land acquisition for this project also resulted in the felling of trees.
  3. National Highway No. 752 C Construction (2022-2023) – The construction of this highway led to the cutting of 570 trees along the Khujner bypass road in 2022, and 317 trees along the Jirapur to Khilchipur stretch in 2023.

Despite these projects being essential for development, the unchecked deforestation has had serious consequences on the region’s ecological balance.

Impacts of Reduced Forest Cover

The adverse effects of deforestation in Rajgarh are multifaceted. According to Beni Prasad Dotaniya, the Forest Divisional Officer of Rajgarh, the depletion of forest cover has significant ecological consequences. These include:

  • Biodiversity Loss: The loss of forested areas leads to a reduction in plant and animal species, which disrupts the natural food chain.
  • Air Quality: Deforestation hampers the natural purification of air, leading to poorer air quality and potentially harmful health impacts.
  • Climate Change: With fewer trees to absorb carbon dioxide, the local climate becomes more extreme, with hotter summers and colder winters.
  • Groundwater Levels: Reduced forest cover contributes to a decrease in groundwater levels, exacerbating water scarcity issues.

Lack of Data on Tree Cutting

One of the significant challenges in managing deforestation in Madhya Pradesh is the lack of accurate data regarding tree cutting. Since January 2023, the state government has empowered local Gram Sabhas to simplify the tree cutting process for development works, but this has resulted in a lack of accountability and oversight by the forest department. The department is unable to track the precise number of trees cut, where they were felled, and whether they were replaced as promised.

Between 2022 and 2023, the Rajgarh Forest Department registered 11 cases of illegal tree felling, with 178 trees affected. Despite this, enforcement has been difficult, and many of the felling incidents remain unmonitored.

State and National Forest Decline

The issue of deforestation in Madhya Pradesh is part of a larger national trend. According to the Indian Forest Survey Report (ISFR) 2023, the state has the largest forest and tree area in the country, covering 85,724 square kilometers. However, it has also seen a reduction of over 612 square kilometers in its forest cover. The report further highlights that while the national forest area has increased by 156 square kilometers since the 2021 assessment, the forest area continues to decline in many states, including Madhya Pradesh.

Conclusion

The ongoing deforestation in Madhya Pradesh, especially in districts like Rajgarh, underscores a growing conflict between developmental projects and environmental conservation. While development is necessary for the state’s progress, it is crucial that sustainable and eco-friendly practices are adopted. Without proper monitoring and enforcement, the promises of replanting trees and protecting forest areas will continue to remain unfulfilled, leading to long-term ecological damage. The situation calls for urgent attention from both the state government and environmental agencies to prevent further degradation of the state’s natural resources.
