Delhi: Old Delhi, renowned for its rich history, iconic markets, and bustling streets, is poised for a major redevelopment as the Delhi government accelerates the restructuring of the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation (SRDC). The initiative aims to restore the heritage charm of the area while addressing long-standing civic issues, making it more attractive for tourists, shoppers, residents, and traders.
SRDC Restructuring Officially Begins
The long-awaited restructuring of the SRDC has officially kicked off, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta appointed as the chairperson. The Delhi government issued a formal order late Monday, and officials confirmed that the remaining members of the corporation will be announced soon, along with their respective jurisdictions.
Officials say that the presence of a “triple-engine” government in Delhi is expected to provide additional momentum to the project, facilitating faster development across Old Delhi’s markets and residential colonies.
Chandni Chowk Visit Highlights Urgent Need for Redevelopment
The move follows Chief Minister Gupta’s inspection of Chandni Chowk on September 25 last year, where she participated in a cleanliness drive and observed the deteriorating condition of the historic market.
Following a terror blast near the Red Fort on November 10, the Chief Minister became more focused on improving safety and infrastructure in Old Delhi. In a meeting with senior officials on November 19, she announced that the government would proceed with restructuring the SRDC to ensure systematic and coordinated redevelopment.
Experts to Guide Heritage and Market Development
The reconstituted SRDC will include experts in heritage conservation, market planning, and urban development, aiming to strengthen planned development in areas such as Chandni Chowk and Jama Masjid.
A government official noted that the restructuring will enhance coordination among multiple agencies, including the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Public Works Department (PWD), and other Delhi government departments, ensuring better planning, execution, and monitoring of redevelopment projects across Old Delhi.
Balancing Heritage Preservation and Modern Infrastructure
The SRDC’s restructuring reflects the government’s focus on preserving Old Delhi’s historic identity while addressing modern urban challenges such as traffic congestion, sanitation, and public safety. Officials hope that the initiative will revive Old Delhi as a vibrant, safe, and tourist-friendly area, benefiting residents, traders, and visitors alike.
