Hyderabad/New Delhi: In a major boost to self-reliance in defence manufacturing, the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), a Hyderabad-based DRDO lab, has transferred three advanced indigenous materials technologies to leading Indian industries. These technologies, developed for strategic and defence applications, are set to strengthen the country’s industrial base and reduce reliance on imports.
Strengthening Indigenous Manufacturing
DMRL has transferred the manufacturing of high-strength radomes to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Jagdishpur. Radomes are critical for advanced radar and missile systems, requiring materials that combine transparency to radar waves with structural resilience under extreme conditions.
The lab has also transferred the production of DMR-1700 steel sheets and plates to Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL), Angul. This specialized grade of steel is vital for defence applications, ensuring durability and reliability under demanding operational environments.
Additionally, the manufacturing of DMR-249A HSLA (High-Strength Low-Alloy) steel plates for naval applications has been transferred to Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). This material enhances survivability and performance of naval platforms by offering superior strength and corrosion resistance.

Expanding Collaboration Beyond Defence
Alongside these technology transfers, DMRL has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) under the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The partnership will leverage DMRL’s expertise, advanced facilities, and metallurgical capabilities to support investigations and enhance safety mechanisms in the aviation sector.
Boost to Atmanirbhar Bharat
These initiatives underline DRDO’s push to integrate advanced research with India’s industrial ecosystem. By transferring indigenous technologies to public and private industry leaders, DRDO is fostering strategic self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
The collaboration with AAIB also reflects DRDO’s expanding role in supporting sectors beyond defence, ensuring national capabilities are strengthened across multiple domains.
