New Delhi: India’s Project Kusha is rapidly emerging as a major step toward strengthening the country’s air defence capabilities. Led by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Project Kusha air defence system aims to provide long-range protection against advanced aerial threats.

According to official developments, the project focuses on building an indigenous system similar to global platforms like S-400 but tailored for India’s needs. This initiative highlights India’s push for self-reliance in defence and reducing dependence on foreign systems.

What is Project Kusha

Project Kusha is an advanced long-range surface-to-air missile (LR-SAM) system being developed by DRDO.

It is designed to:

  • Intercept enemy aircraft, fighter jets, and drones
  • Neutralize cruise missiles and stealth threats
  • Provide multi-layered air defence coverage

The system will act as a shield for critical infrastructure, military bases, and major cities.

What are the Features

Here are the key features of Project Kusha;

1. Multi-Layered Defence Capability

It will include multiple interceptor missiles with different ranges:

  • Short-range interceptors
  • Medium-range interceptors
  • Long-range interceptors (up to 350–400 km)

This ensures protection against threats at different distances.

2. Indigenous Technology

The system is being developed completely in India by DRDO.

This supports:

  • Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative
  • Reduced dependency on foreign defence imports
  • Growth of domestic defence manufacturing

3. Advanced Radar and Tracking

Project Kusha will use cutting-edge radar systems to:

  • Detect targets at long distances
  • Track multiple threats simultaneously
  • Engage high-speed targets with precision

4. Comparable to Global Systems

The Kusha system is expected to be comparable to advanced systems like:

  • Russia’s S-400
  • Other global long-range air defence platforms

However, it will be customized for India’s operational needs.

Latest Developments in Project Kusha

According to recent updates:

  • DRDO has made significant progress in design and development
  • The project has entered advanced stages of testing and planning
  • The Indian Air Force is expected to be a primary user
  • Deployment may begin in phases once trials are completed

The government is actively supporting the project to speed up development.

Why Project Kusha is Important for India

Here is the following importance of this indigenous project;

1. Strengthens National Security

It will provide strong protection against:

  • Enemy aircraft
  • Missile attacks
  • Modern aerial threats

2. Reduces Import Dependency

India currently depends on foreign systems like S-400.

Project Kusha will:

  • Cut long-term costs
  • Increase strategic independence

3. Boosts Defence Industry

The project will:

  • Create opportunities for Indian defence companies
  • Promote innovation and R&D
  • Generate employment

How It Fits into India’s Defence Strategy

India is building a layered air defence system, which includes:

  • Short-range systems (like Akash)
  • Medium-range systems
  • Long-range systems (like Kusha)

This layered approach ensures complete airspace protection.

Future Outlook

Project Kusha is expected to:

  • Become a core part of India’s air defence network
  • Be deployed across strategic locations
  • Possibly be exported to friendly countries in the future

With continuous progress, India is moving closer to becoming a global defence technology leader.
