New Delhi: In a significant step towards strengthening India’s defence and internal security ecosystem, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday. The agreement aims to enhance collaboration in research, education, training, and technology support for defence and internal security.
The MoU was signed by Distinguished Scientist and Director General (Production Coordination and Services Interaction) Dr. Chandrika Kaushik on behalf of DRDO and Vice Chancellor of RRU Prof. (Dr.) Bimal N Patel. The ceremony was graced by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at South Block, New Delhi. Also present were Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO, Dr. Samir V Kamat.
Strengthening Self-Reliance and Strategic Autonomy
According to the Ministry of Defence, the partnership is designed to strengthen India’s self-reliance in defence and internal security technologies in alignment with the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and the whole-of-nation approach during Amrit Kaal. The collaboration seeks to integrate technological innovation, academic research, and operational insights to enhance national security preparedness and reinforce strategic autonomy.
RRU, an institution of national importance under the Ministry of Home Affairs and the UGC-designated Nodal Centre for Defence Studies, brings its academic, training, and policy expertise in internal security. DRDO, India’s premier defence research organisation, contributes indigenous technologies and system-level expertise to meet the evolving requirements of the armed forces and security agencies.
Focus Areas of Collaboration
Under the MoU, DRDO and RRU will undertake several joint initiatives, including:
- Collaborative research projects addressing emerging security challenges
- Doctoral and fellowship programmes for students and professionals in defence and internal security
- Specialised training and capacity-building initiatives for security forces
- Studies on technology gaps, future operational requirements, and life-cycle management of DRDO-developed systems deployed in Central Armed Police Forces and other agencies under the Ministry of Home Affairs
The collaboration is expected to create a strong ecosystem for research, innovation, and skill development in defence and internal security domains. By integrating academic excellence with cutting-edge technology, the partnership aims to equip India’s security apparatus with the tools and knowledge necessary to respond effectively to evolving threats.
Building a Future-Ready Security Framework
Speaking at the event, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted the importance of such collaborations in enhancing India’s operational and technological capabilities. “Partnerships between premier research organisations and academic institutions are critical to building a self-reliant and technologically advanced security framework,” he said.
The MoU marks a significant milestone in India’s ongoing efforts to synergise defence R&D with academic research and professional training, ensuring that India’s armed forces and security agencies remain future-ready and strategically empowered.
