Kolkata: Coal India Limited (CIL), one of India’s leading public sector enterprises under the Ministry of Coal, organized a seminar on the theme “Contract Management – Legal Aspects and Contract Closure” at its Corporate Office in Kolkata. The event brought together experts, senior executives, and contract professionals to discuss the evolving challenges and best practices in contract lifecycle management.
Leadership Emphasizes Strategic Procurement and Timely Closure
Inaugurating the seminar, CIL Chairman Mr. P.M. Prasad highlighted the company’s leadership in GeM (Government e-Marketplace) procurement, affirming that Coal India remains at the forefront of digital and transparent procurement. He underscored the importance of timely discussions, effective consultations, and avoiding procedural delays to ensure smooth implementation and closure of contracts. “Contract management is a continuous learning process,” he stated, “and valuable insights can be drawn from professionals at all levels.”
Focus on Legal Clarity and Ease of Doing Business
Speaking at the event, Director (Technical) Mr. Achyut Ghatak stressed the importance of clear contractual guidelines and their effective implementation to minimize legal disputes. He further linked the timely closure of contracts to the government’s Ease of Doing Business initiative, noting that this calls for focused monitoring and continuous improvement.
Chief Vigilance Officer Mr. Brajesh Kumar Tripathy called the seminar’s theme “highly relevant in the current context.” He emphasized that advanced training delivered by experts from reputed institutions like IIM Calcutta would provide attendees with cutting-edge knowledge to handle modern contract challenges.

The technical sessions were led by Professor R. Rajesh Babu and Professor Megha Sharma from Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, renowned for their expertise in law and contract strategy. Their sessions covered key legal frameworks, contract enforcement mechanisms, risk mitigation, and best practices in contract closure.
