Jaldapra, West Bengal: In a moving incident that tugs at the heart, a 15-day-old elephant calf was rescued from raging floodwaters by India’s forest officials. What began as a heroic act soon turned bittersweet when the little one’s mother refused to accept her baby back.

The heartbreaking moment has now gone viral, sparking emotion and admiration across the country.

Swift Action by IFS Parveen Kaswan and His Team

Heavy rains had caused severe flooding in parts of the region, leaving the newborn calf stranded and helpless. Acting quickly, the forest department rushed to the site and pulled the young elephant to safety, preventing what could have been a tragic loss.

A short clip shared online captures the rescue — a delicate operation carried out with utmost care.

IFS Officer Parveen Kaswan Shares Emotional Update

Indian Forest Service officer Parveen Kaswan, 2016 batch, posted a 29-second video of the rescue on X (formerly Twitter). The footage shows forest staff gently guiding the calf down from a pickup truck after it was saved from the river.

In his post, Kaswan wrote:

A 15-day-old elephant calf rescued from the river during a recent flood in another district. After failed reunion attempts with her mother, as a last resort, she’s under expert care at one of our Pilkhana.”

He later added another line that touched thousands of hearts:

“Healthy, active, and responding well. Such a small kid.”

Mother Refuses to Accept Her Baby

After the rescue, forest officers tried multiple times to reunite the calf with its mother, hoping nature would take its course. Unfortunately, the mother elephant refused to accept the little one — a rare but painful reality in the wild.

With no other option, the team decided to move the calf to a Pilkhana, a dedicated elephant care and rehabilitation camp.

Safe Haven at Pilkhana

At the Pilkhana, the calf is now receiving 24×7 veterinary attention, warmth, and care from trained forest staff. Officials confirmed that the baby elephant is in stable condition, feeding well, and slowly adjusting to its new environment.

Kaswan’s video and updates reassured wildlife lovers that the tiny elephant is “healthy, active, and responding well.”

Social Media Reacts with Compassion

As the video circulated on social media, thousands of people reacted with mixed emotions — sadness for the rejection, but deep gratitude for the rescue.

Hope Beyond Heartbreak

Though the baby elephant’s journey began in tragedy, its story now carries a message of hope. With the care of forest officers and veterinarians, the little one is getting a second chance at life.

This incident once again highlights the relentless efforts of India’s forest frontline workers, who continue to safeguard wildlife even in the harshest conditions.
