Gorakhpur: Former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur, currently lodged in Deoria District Jail in connection with a long-pending fraud case, was rushed to hospital late Tuesday night after experiencing severe chest pain and acute restlessness. Medical authorities suspect he may have suffered a heart attack.
Emergency Medical Response and Current Condition
Thakur was initially taken to Deoria Medical College, where doctors found his condition serious enough to warrant referral to Gorakhpur Medical College around 2 AM. Hospital officials confirmed that he is undergoing treatment under the supervision of specialist doctors, and an ECG indicated poor cardiac activity.
Sources said Thakur had not received any regular medications while in jail, which could have aggravated his condition. Given the gravity of the situation, doctors are considering transferring him to Lucknow for advanced treatment.

Political Leaders Raise Alarm Over Jail Conditions
UP Congress President Ajay Rai posted a video four days ago highlighting Thakur’s deteriorating health. He claimed that Thakur was facing continuous mistreatment and harassment in jail, warning that his life is at risk while government authorities remain silent.
“His condition is critical, and his life is in danger. Yet, the system continues to remain silent,” Rai said in his video.
Court Proceedings and Alleged Lack of Evidence
Just three days ago, on December 3, Thakur appeared before the Deoria Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court for a bail hearing. The court reprimanded the investigating officer from Lucknow for failing to provide concrete evidence justifying Thakur’s arrest.
“So far, no concrete evidence has emerged in the investigation to prove that Amitabh Thakur’s arrest was necessary,” the judge remarked.
Thakur expressed fear during the hearing, stating that his arrest at 2 AM had caused him genuine concern for his life. He alleged that the arrest was part of selective targeting, following his public exposure of certain prominent local leaders.
Background of the Case
Amitabh Thakur, a resident of Viram Khand, Gomtinagar, Lucknow, was arrested in connection with a land fraud case dating back over two decades. The controversy centers on a 6,000 square feet plot in Deoria’s industrial area, initially allotted to his wife Nutan Thakur in 1999, while Thakur served as Superintendent of Police in Deoria.
During the allotment, the plot was registered in his wife’s name as ‘Nutan Devi’, and his own name was misrepresented as ‘Abhijat’. The plot, categorized as B-2 land, remained undeveloped for three years. In September 2002, Nutan Thakur transferred the lease deed to businessman Sanjay Pratap Singh, whose construction firm currently occupies the site.
A case was registered in September 2025 at Talkatora Police Station, Lucknow, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was subsequently formed. Another case was registered at Deoria Sadar Kotwali, after which Thakur was arrested from Shahjahanpur on December 10, 2025, and remanded to judicial custody.
