From Plumber to ACP: Mumbai’s Encounter Specialist Daya Nayak Gets Final Promotion Before Hanging Up Boots

Mumbai Police’s Legendary Officer Bows Out with Honour After 30 Years of Service
Indian Masterminds Stories

Mumbai: One of India’s most well-known police officers, Daya Nayak, was promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) just days before his retirement, bringing to close an extraordinary career that earned him fame, controversy, and cinematic inspiration.

A senior officer in Mumbai Police’s Crime Branch Unit 9, Nayak will officially retire on July 31. Over his three-decade-long career, he has eliminated over 80 hardened criminals, earning the title of “encounter specialist” and a reputation as a pivotal force in breaking the spine of the Mumbai underworld in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

“Wish I Had More Time” – Nayak Expresses Gratitude After Promotion

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Nayak wrote:

With gratitude and pride, I’d like to share that I’ve been promoted to Assistant Commissioner of Police. While I wish I had more time in the role, I’m deeply satisfied knowing I’ve served my state and nation to the best of my ability. Honoured by this milestone and all that led to it.”

From Humble Beginnings to Fearless Officer

Nayak’s journey is nothing short of inspirational. Born in Yennehole village, Karkala taluk of Udupi district, Karnataka, he moved to Mumbai in 1979 as a young boy to support his family. From working menial jobs—as a plumber and canteen boy—he persevered in his studies and completed his graduation.

He joined the police force in 1995 as a Sub-Inspector after graduating from the Maharashtra Police Academy.

Crusader Against the Underworld

Nayak became part of an elite group of officers nicknamed the “Dirty Harrys” of Mumbai Police, who cracked down on the underworld syndicates that had long held the city hostage. He is known for neutralising gangsters affiliated with Dawood Ibrahim, Arun Gawli, Amar Naik, and Chhota Rajan.

His fearless and high-profile operations made him both a hero and a lightning rod for controversies.

Battling Controversy with Resolve

In the early 2000s, Nayak faced allegations in a disproportionate assets case, which drew intense media scrutiny. He was later exonerated, emerging with his reputation largely intact. The case, however, did result in a brief suspension and public speculation.

Inspiring Cinema & Social Impact

Nayak’s extraordinary life inspired Bollywood films such as Ab Tak Chhappan and Department, which portrayed gritty narratives of encounter cops and their moral dilemmas.

Beyond his policing duties, he contributed to society by building the Radha Nayak Educational Trust—a school in his native village, named after his mother.

A Fitting Farewell with Glittering Guests

The promotion ceremony was graced by several Bollywood celebrities and noted personalities, underlining the cult status Nayak enjoys in popular culture. Attendees included:

  • Amitabh Bachchan, Bollywood legend
  • M. F. Husain, acclaimed artist
  • Suniel Shetty and Aftab Shivdasani, actors

Their presence added emotional heft and public recognition to Nayak’s final milestone in service.

Closing Chapter of a Storied Career

Daya Nayak’s legacy will remain etched in the annals of Indian policing — a rare blend of fearlessness, public admiration, and complex morality. As Mumbai bids farewell to one of its most storied cops, a generation remembers him not just as a police officer, but as a symbol of justice with grit and heart.
