Barmer: GAIL (India) Limited has begun drilling operations for its first exploratory well, Sheo#1, in the Barmer district of Rajasthan. The drilling is part of the RJ-ONHP-2021/1 onland exploration block, awarded to GAIL under the Open Acreage Licensing Programme (OALP) – VII Bidding Round.
Milestone in GAIL’s Upstream Expansion
The spudding of Sheo#1 marks a major milestone in GAIL’s upstream exploration journey. Traditionally recognized for its leadership in natural gas transmission and marketing, GAIL is now strengthening its presence in exploration and production. The Barmer project reflects its ambition to diversify energy sources and harness domestic hydrocarbon potential.
Senior Leadership Marks the Occasion
A spudding ceremony was held on August 20, 2025, to celebrate the start of drilling. R. K. Singhal, Director (Business Development), Sanjay Agarwal, Executive Director (BD & E&P), and other senior officials from GAIL visited the Sheo#1 site to mark the occasion. Their presence reinforced the strategic importance of this exploration initiative.

Driving India’s Energy Security Goals
Exploration in the Barmer block will help unlock new hydrocarbon resources in Rajasthan, a state with proven oil and gas reserves. By expanding upstream activities, GAIL aims to contribute to India’s energy self-reliance while reducing dependence on imports. This initiative aligns with the Government of India’s vision of achieving energy security through a balanced mix of exploration, renewables, and clean energy solutions.
