Game Changer: DRDO Unveils Quantum Technology Research Hub in Delhi, Aiming for Sovereign Quantum Solutions – Know More!

India’s National Quantum Mission Gets a Boost with DRDO’s Advanced Quantum Tech Centre.
Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) inaugurated its Quantum Technology Research Centre (QTRC) at Metcalfe House, Delhi, marking a significant milestone in India’s push towards developing indigenous quantum technology capabilities for strategic and defence applications. The facility was formally inaugurated by Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D, and Chairman of DRDO.

A Step Forward in Indigenous Quantum Capabilities
The establishment of the QTRC is seen as a critical step in India’s pursuit of sovereign quantum technologies that are vital for securing the nation’s future in the realms of quantum communications, quantum sensing, and post-quantum cryptography. The centre is designed to advance the nation’s quantum science research and development efforts, particularly in areas with direct relevance to national security.

Cutting-Edge Infrastructure and Focus Areas
The QTRC is equipped with state-of-the-art experimental infrastructure to facilitate advanced research in quantum technologies. Among the key facilities are:

  • Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) and Distributed Feedback Lasers for characterisation.
  • Single-photon source test beds for enabling ultra-secure quantum communications.
  • Platforms dedicated to Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) research, crucial for the development of secure communication systems in the post-quantum era.
  • Setups for the characterisation of micro-fabricated alkali vapor cells, a fundamental component in quantum research.

QKD, which is being developed under the guidance of DRDO’s Scientific Analysis Group (SAG), will play an essential role in secure communication, offering unbreakable encryption in the quantum age.

Advancing Foundational Quantum Technologies
In addition to quantum communications, the QTRC will focus on foundational quantum technologies with potential applications in both defence and civilian sectors.

The centre, spearheaded by DRDO’s Solid State Physics Laboratory (SSPL), is advancing-

  • Ultra-small atomic clocks based on Coherent Population Trapping (CPT), essential for precise timekeeping in environments where Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) may be unavailable.
  • Atomic magnetometers using optically pumped magnetometry for ultra-sensitive detection of magnetic fields, aiding in applications ranging from navigation to defence surveillance.

The research into solid-state quantum devices and materials is also a key area of focus, aimed at developing innovative solutions for future technological challenges.

India’s Commitment to Quantum Leadership
The QTRC’s inauguration is a significant step in India’s efforts to become a global leader in quantum technology. As a key player in the National Quantum Mission, DRDO is committed to fostering indigenous innovation and developing sovereign quantum technologies. The QTRC is positioned to play a pivotal role in ensuring that India remains at the forefront of this critical technology space.

Dr Samir V Kamat, speaking at the inauguration, emphasized DRDO’s commitment to self-reliance in quantum technologies, particularly in securing India’s strategic future. He also highlighted the importance of collaboration between various research institutions, industries, and government entities to drive the national quantum agenda forward.

Inauguration Ceremony Attendees
The ceremony was attended by senior DRDO officials and scientists, including Suma Varughese, Director General (Micro Electronic Devices, Computational Systems & Cyber Systems), whose leadership was instrumental in conceptualizing the QTRC. Dr Manu Korulla, Director General (Resource & Management), along with the Directors of SSPL and SAG, were also present, marking a historic moment for India’s quantum research community.
