Gandhinagar: Embodying Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi’, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has announced a comprehensive redevelopment of the historic Ghela Somnath Mahadev Temple in Rajkot district. With a ₹10 crore investment, the project aims to restore the spiritual and cultural essence of the 550-year-old temple while equipping it with world-class amenities and infrastructure for devotees.
Laser Light & Sound Show to Narrate the Temple’s Spiritual Legacy
A major highlight of the initiative is the ₹4 crore Laser Light and Sound Show, set to narrate the valorous history of Ghela Somnath, a temple where devotees reportedly laid down their lives during Mughal invasions to protect the Shivling. The immersive show, akin to similar attractions at Somnath Mahadev and other iconic temples, is expected to draw pilgrims and tourists alike, enhancing the spiritual experience.

Holistic Temple Redevelopment under Tourism Department
The Gujarat Pavitra Yatradham Vikas Board (GPYVB), under the State Tourism Department, is spearheading modernisation works worth ₹6 crore. Key developments include:
- Renovation of the main temple, main gate, and Paliya Samadhi
- Construction of Yagna Shala, Sant Shed, and Shaheed Smarak
- A musical fountain and amphitheatre for cultural and devotional programs
- Beautification of pathways, landscaping, gardens, and sitting zones
- Infrastructure Boost: Pilgrim Facilities and Cultural Integration
- To enhance the experience for lakhs of visiting devotees, the redevelopment will also focus on:
- Bathing ghats, changing rooms, and parking spaces
- A shopping centre near Meenal Devi foothills
- Shivji sculptures and paintings illustrating spiritual life stages
- Stone cladding and marble work in the sanctum sanctorum
- Shops along both sides of the temple’s access road
Development of front roadside compound, ramp with steps, and decorative arches
These developments aim to blend spirituality, aesthetics, and functionality, turning the temple into a vibrant cultural and devotional hub.
