Panaji/New Delhi: The long-awaited revival of container services at Mormugao Port is set to reshape Goa’s logistics and industrial landscape, said State Transport and Industries Minister Mauvin Godinho at Trade Meet 2025 on Thursday.
Addressing industry stakeholders at the conclave, Godinho emphasized that the port’s revitalization would significantly lower freight costs, enhance supply chain efficiency, and unlock new growth avenues—particularly for Goa’s thriving pharmaceutical sector.
“With upgraded infrastructure, including cranes and handling equipment, Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) is taking the right steps to re-establish the port as a competitive logistics hub,” Godinho noted.
Strategic Edge for Local Industries
Godinho underscored the port’s untapped potential, highlighting that its optimal use would benefit local industries. Goa, despite being a small state, contributes over 8% to global pharmaceutical production. The availability of container services at Mormugao will eliminate the dependency on JNPT or Navi Mumbai for export-import activities, thus saving time and operational costs.
Collaborative Push from Key Stakeholders
The event, hosted by Delta Ports Mormugao Terminal Pvt Ltd, was conducted in partnership with the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) and supported by the Goa Industrial Development Corporation (Goa-IDC).
Goa-IDC Chairperson Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco stressed the importance of efficient logistics infrastructure in driving industrial acceleration in the state.
MPA’s Growth Vision Despite Past Setbacks
MPA Deputy Chairperson Vinayak Rao noted that the port—operational since 1885—was bouncing back from challenges like the mining ban, and was firmly on a new growth trajectory.
Meanwhile, Goa-IDC Managing Director Pravimal Abhishek stated that the cost of transporting cargo to external ports would be drastically reduced, bringing direct relief to local industries.
Delta Ports Commits to Global Standards
Shamil Ahmed, Managing Director of Delta Ports, reaffirmed the company’s long-term commitment to Goa’s industrial ecosystem. Operating under a 30-year concession agreement with MPA, Ahmed promised world-class container handling facilities to make Goa a competitive logistics node.
“We’re committed to developing Mormugao into a port that matches global container standards, supporting not just Goa but the wider western region,” he added.
