In a major push to enhance air connectivity in Bihar, Chief Minister Mr. Nitish Kumar has approved the construction of Greenfield airports in six districts—Birpur, Munger, Balmikinagar, Muzaffarpur, Saharsa, and Bhagalpur. The state cabinet has also sanctioned an advance amount of Rs. 2 crore 90 lakh 91 thousand 720 for conducting the Obstacle Limitation Surfaces (OLS) survey, which is the first critical step toward airport development.

OLS Survey to Lay Foundation for Airport Design and Safety
The OLS survey plays a crucial role in the design and safety of airports. It helps identify and assess all potential obstacles in the flight path, particularly during takeoff and landing, ensuring that the airspace remains clear for safe aircraft operations. The survey essentially creates a “security map” for each proposed site, ensuring that the airports meet all safety and regulatory standards.
Gayaji Airport to Become All-Weather Operational Hub
In a parallel development, the cabinet has approved the installation of a CAT-I lighting system at Gayaji Airport under its expansion plan. This modern navigation technology enables aircraft to land and take off safely even during fog, mist, or inclement weather, making Gayaji an all-weather airport.
To facilitate this, the cabinet has approved a compensation amount of Rs. 137 crore 17 lakh 16 thousand 16 for acquiring 18.2442 acres of land needed for the installation of the CAT-I system.
Strengthening Bihar’s Aviation Infrastructure
These developments come after the successful expansion of Patna’s Jai Prakash Narayan International Airport and the establishment of a new airport in Darbhanga. Additionally, air services from Purnia Airport are expected to commence shortly, with the inauguration date likely to be announced soon.
The decision to construct new Greenfield airports in six more districts is part of the state government’s broader plan to significantly enhance Bihar’s aviation infrastructure. Once completed, these airports will not only offer faster and more comfortable travel options for passengers but will also provide a much-needed boost to local businesses, tourism, and investment opportunities.
Economic and Regional Development Expected
Officials believe that expanding air connectivity will create new economic corridors across the state, reduce travel time, and attract investors by improving access to previously underserved regions. Local tourism is also expected to benefit from the improved infrastructure, especially in culturally and historically rich areas like Balmikinagar and Munger.
Chief Minister Mr. Kumar reiterated the government’s commitment to balanced regional development and infrastructure-led growth. The construction of these airports is expected to play a key role in transforming Bihar’s connectivity and economic landscape in the coming years.
