New Delhi / Brasilia – Brazil’s growing interest in India’s digital public infrastructure, including Unified Payments Interface (UPI) integration and AI-enhanced DPI, is strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two major emerging economies.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s state visit to India concluded on 22 February 2026, marked by discussions to explore deeper technology and digital partnerships with India, signalling a pivotal shift in India-Brazil relations towards digital integration.
Details of Brazil UPI Integration
During President Lula’s visit, Brazil officially expressed strong interest in adopting elements of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) — a system that includes platforms like the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) — to support fintech innovation and inclusive digital services. This interest reflects Brazil’s focus on leveraging proven digital governance models to accelerate its own digital transformation.

Brazil is also exploring ways to link India’s UPI with Brazil’s own payment system, Pix, to facilitate smoother and faster cross-border payments and strengthen economic digital connectivity between the two countries.
AI Integration in Public Digital Systems
Beyond payment systems, Brazilian diplomats and ministers highlighted the potential value of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Digital Public Infrastructure. The aim is to enhance DPI with AI-driven services that can improve public service delivery, data insights, and digital inclusion, while ensuring responsible and ethical AI deployment.
Brazil’s participation in India’s AI Impact Summit 2026 reinforced common priorities on responsible AI and sovereign technology development, which both countries see as critical pillars of digital cooperation.
Strategic Context of Brazil UPI Integration
This focus on digital and technological collaboration comes amid broader efforts to expand ties between India and Brazil. Recent economic agreements include cooperation in mining, trade, AI, energy, and healthcare, with both nations aiming to increase bilateral trade significantly in coming years.
Both leaders have emphasised that enhanced digital cooperation will not only boost economic integration but also deepen strategic engagement across multiple sectors — from fintech to AI and beyond.
What is the Importance of Brazil UPI Integration
- UPI Integration: Offers Brazil access to a mature real-time payments network that can boost financial inclusion, promote digital entrepreneurship, and enhance interoperability between Indian and Brazilian payment systems.
- AI in DPI: Equips public systems with smarter, data-driven capabilities that can transform how citizens interact with government services — while addressing risks around data protection and AI governance.
