The monumental Kashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2021, has done more than just restore the spiritual grandeur of Kashi (Varanasi). It has become a cornerstone of Uttar Pradesh’s economic transformation, contributing a staggering Rs. 1.25 lakh crore to the state’s economy in just over three and a half years.
Driven by the visionary leadership of PM Modi and the on-ground execution by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the initiative is serving as a catalyst for employment, tourism, and cultural revival, not just in Varanasi but across Purvanchal and the entire state.
Over 252 Million Devotees Spark a Massive Economic Ripple
Since the corridor’s inauguration, more than 252.8 million pilgrims and tourists have visited Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple. According to Mr. Vishwa Bhushan Mishra, Chief Executive Officer of the temple, each visitor contributes approximately Rs. 5,000 to the local economy, generating direct and indirect growth across multiple sectors.
From hoteliers and local artisans to street vendors, boatmen, and priests, thousands of livelihoods are thriving due to this religious tourism model.
Security and Connectivity Turn UP into a Tourist Magnet
Under CM Yogi Adityanath’s governance, Uttar Pradesh has undergone a notable transformation in law and order, infrastructure, and religious urban planning.
- Improved road networks
- Beautified ghats
- Streamlined connectivity from the airport to the Ganga Ghats
These enhancements have significantly boosted domestic and foreign tourist arrivals, positioning UP as a global spiritual destination.
Pilgrims From South India and Beyond Drive Inclusive State Growth
Notably, 70% of pilgrims visiting the Kashi Vishwanath Mandir are from South India, while 15% hail from other states and regions. After their visit to Kashi, many devotees continue their journey to other sacred sites such as:
- Ayodhya
- Mathura
- Vindhyachal
- Tirtharaj Prayag
- Naimisharanya
- Chitrakoot
This creates a multi-point economic impact, fueling statewide tourism revenue and increasing per capita GDP.
A Model of Religious Urban Development for the Entire Nation
Describing Kashi as a blueprint for national development, Mr. Mishra emphasized that the project has become a model of religious urbanization, now being replicated across other spiritual hubs in UP.
The state is actively developing:
- Ayodhya (Ram Mandir corridor)
- Mathura-Vrindavan
- Vindhyachal
- Naimisharanya
- Chitrakoot
All under the broader strategy of using religious tourism to unlock economic and social upliftment.
From Heritage to Hub: Kashi Sets a New Development Benchmark
Once considered a city solely of ancient temples and narrow lanes, Kashi has now emerged as a thriving spiritual and economic hub. With the support of NITI Aayog, ministries, and local governance, the success of the Dham is an example of how cultural heritage and economic development can be powerfully interlinked.
