In preparation for the upcoming Camera Trap Exercise, Sundarban Tiger Reserve recently conducted field training for approximately 50 staff members. The training focused on protocols and the installation of trap cameras essential for the estimation of tigers in the Sundarbans.
Scheduled to commence on November 27, the Camera Trap Exercise will span 35 days. This year’s initiative is set to cover Sundarban Tiger Reserve and selected areas of the South 24 Parganas division in the initial phase. The second phase will encompass the remaining regions of the South 24 Parganas division.
With a total of 732 trap points identified, the exercise will deploy 1464 trap cameras across these locations. The comprehensive survey aims to provide valuable insights into the tiger population within the Sundarbans.
In the previous census, conducted in the entirety of Sundarban forests, the tiger population was estimated to be 101. The forthcoming Camera Trap Exercise is expected to contribute crucial data for the ongoing conservation efforts in the region.
