New Delhi: The Government of India has emphasized timely availability of fertilizers as a top priority for supporting agriculture. During Kharif 2025 and the ongoing Rabi season, improved coordination between the Ministry of Railways and the Department of Fertilizers ensured smooth and faster movement of fertilizer rakes across the country. This collaboration prevented shortages and ensured that farmers received supplies during critical cultivation stages.
Record Fertilizer Movement During FY26
From April to December 2025, the Government recorded a historic movement of fertilizers, totaling 530.16 Lakh Metric Tons (LMT) — surpassing the 500 LMT mark for the first time. This represents a 12.2% increase compared to FY 2024–25 and 8.5% higher than the previous record in FY 2023–24.
- Urea: 350.45 LMT supplied against a requirement of 312.40 LMT
- Major P&K Fertilizers (DAP, MOP, NPKS): 287.69 LMT supplied against a requirement of 252.81 LMT
The consistent supply across states ensured uninterrupted access for farmers during peak agricultural periods.
To ensure food security and support our farmers, the Department of Fertilizers and @RailMinIndia have achieved unprecedented coordination in FY 2025-26. Rake Movement and Efficiency Gains
Average rake loading improved steadily during the Kharif 2025 season:
- July: 72 rakes/day
- August: 78 rakes/day
- September: 80 rakes/day
Urea rake movement increased to 10,841 rakes, marking an 8% rise over the previous year, while P&K fertilizers recorded 8,806 rakes, up 18% year-on-year. These numbers reflect enhanced collaboration among the Railways, Ports, State Governments, and fertilizer companies.
Focused Planning and Monitoring Support Farmers
The remarkable performance in fertilizer distribution is credited to the Government’s robust planning, real-time coordination, proactive bottleneck resolution, and state-level monitoring. This integrated approach has strengthened India’s agricultural supply chain and ensured food security by providing farmers with the necessary inputs on time.
The robust performance in fertilizer distribution demonstrates the Government’s commitment to ensuring agricultural stability, boosting productivity, and maintaining adequate fertilizer stocks across all states. With strategic planning and effective coordination, India continues to set benchmarks in timely and efficient fertilizer supply.
