Guwahati: In a significant step toward sustainable infrastructure and environmental stewardship, GRID-INDIA’s North Eastern Regional Load Despatch Centre (NERLDC) Office-cum-Control Centre in Guwahati has been awarded the GRIHA Four-Star Green Building Certification. This recognition makes it one of the first green-certified operational buildings in North East India, marking a major milestone in the region’s journey toward eco-friendly and energy-efficient development.

Recognition for Sustainable Infrastructure Excellence

The GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) certification, developed by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and endorsed by the Government of India, is India’s national rating system for evaluating the environmental performance of buildings. Achieving a Four-Star rating reflects GRID-INDIA’s strong focus on integrating green design principles, energy efficiency, and sustainable operational practices in its infrastructure projects.

The prestigious certificate was formally presented to Mr. Sajan George, Chief General Manager (In-Charge), NERLDC, by Mr. Srinivas Katikithala, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). The event was graced by the presence of H.E. Elen Stener, Ambassador of Norway to India, and Mr. Ajay Khanna, Director General, International Solar Alliance (ISA) — further highlighting the international recognition of India’s efforts toward sustainability and climate resilience.

A Testament to GRID-INDIA’s Green Vision

This achievement underscores GRID-INDIA’s unwavering commitment to sustainability, climate responsibility, and low-carbon growth. The NERLDC Guwahati facility has been designed with state-of-the-art green features, including optimized natural lighting, energy-efficient HVAC systems, rainwater harvesting, and waste management mechanisms.

By adhering to GRIHA’s rigorous sustainability benchmarks, the building significantly reduces energy consumption, minimizes water usage, and promotes renewable resource integration — all while maintaining operational excellence as a critical component of India’s national power grid management network.

Leaders Laud GRID-INDIA’s Green Commitment

Speaking at the award ceremony, Mr. Srinivas Katikithala praised GRID-INDIA’s proactive approach in aligning with national priorities such as the Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) and India’s net-zero emissions goal by 2070. He emphasized the importance of sustainable infrastructure in driving long-term energy security and environmental conservation.

H.E. Elen Stener, Ambassador of Norway, congratulated GRID-INDIA for its leadership in integrating sustainability into core energy operations, noting that such initiatives reflect India’s growing role in global climate action. Mr. Ajay Khanna, DG, ISA, lauded the achievement as a “model for future public infrastructure” that demonstrates how renewable energy integration and green building design can coexist within mission-critical facilities.

Setting a Benchmark for Green Energy Infrastructure

As the central agency responsible for managing India’s power system operations, GRID-INDIA (Grid Controller of India Limited) plays a crucial role in ensuring reliable, secure, and sustainable electricity transmission across regions. The organization has consistently promoted innovation, digital transformation, and green infrastructure development across its regional centers.

The GRIHA certification for the Guwahati NERLDC facility serves as a benchmark for future grid-related infrastructure projects, reaffirming GRID-INDIA’s commitment to creating an environmentally responsible operational ecosystem. It also symbolizes a step forward in integrating sustainability into the nation’s power infrastructure — from design and construction to daily operation.
