Kolkata: Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd achieved a major milestone with the delivery of the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) Anjadip to the Indian Navy at Chennai Port Trust. This delivery marks the fifth warship handed over by GRSE in 2025, reflecting the shipyard’s strong production capabilities and commitment to indigenization in defense shipbuilding.
Milestone Delivery and Naval Acceptance
Anjadip is the third vessel in a series of eight ASW SWCs being constructed for the Indian Navy. Rear Admiral Gautam Marwaha, VSM, CSO (Tech), Eastern Naval Command, formally accepted the warship on behalf of the Navy. With this delivery, GRSE has built a total of 115 warships and delivered 77 to the Indian Navy, underscoring its position as one of India’s premier naval shipbuilders.
Earlier in 2025, GRSE delivered four warships, including the advanced guided missile frigate Himgiri, two ASW SWCs – Arnala and Androth – and the large survey vessel Ikshak. All these vessels have since been commissioned into the Navy, marking a remarkable achievement for any shipyard in the country. Notably, Anjadip’s delivery comes less than four months after Androth, highlighting GRSE’s efficient and rapid production capabilities.
Specifications and Capabilities of ASW SWC Anjadip
Anjadip features a 30 mm indigenous Naval Surface Gun and boasts nearly 88% local content, emphasizing GRSE’s focus on Atmanirbharta (self-reliance) in defense shipbuilding. The vessel is equipped for full-scale sub-surface surveillance, anti-submarine search and attack operations, and coordinated missions with aircraft. It also houses a combat management system, lightweight torpedoes, and anti-submarine warfare rockets.
The ship can accommodate 57 personnel, including seven officers. Its propulsion system includes three water jets fitted to marine diesel engines, allowing superior maneuverability and agility in shallow coastal waters. With a draught of just 2.7 metres, Anjadip can efficiently navigate littoral zones, enhancing India’s coastal defense capabilities.
Ongoing Projects and Strategic Vision
GRSE is currently constructing 12 more warships, including two P17A advanced stealth frigates, five additional ASW SWCs, a large survey vessel, and four next-generation offshore patrol vessels. Internationally, the shipyard is building a dozen multi-purpose vessels for a German client, along with four research vessels and 13 hybrid ferries. Additionally, GRSE is anticipating the award of a contract to build five next-generation corvettes in the current financial year.
