Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) has signed a three-year Rate Running Contract (RRC) with the Indian Coast Guard for the maintenance and overhaul of MTU 4000 series engines installed on Coast Guard vessels. The agreement was signed in New Delhi on 26 December 2025, marking a significant step toward strengthening the operational readiness of India’s maritime security forces.

Scope of the Contract

Under the terms of the contract, GRSE will carry out W6 routines and major overhauls of the MTU 4000 series engines. These engines power several Coast Guard vessels, and the maintenance work is crucial for ensuring reliable performance at sea.

All overhaul and testing operations will take place at GRSE’s Diesel Engine Plant in Ranchi, a specialized facility dedicated to supporting both Naval and Coast Guard platforms. The engines will be tested at rated power, ensuring optimal performance and adherence to operational standards.

Enhancing Fleet Readiness

The contract is expected to significantly improve the reliability and availability of the Coast Guard fleet. By conducting regular W6 routines and thorough overhauls, GRSE will help reduce downtime for vessels, allowing the Indian Coast Guard to maintain mission readiness and maritime security efficiently.

This collaboration underscores the government’s focus on indigenization of defense support services and highlights the capabilities of domestic shipbuilders in maintaining critical maritime assets.
