Ahmedabad: Gujarat is all set to see its first indigenously built metro train hit the tracks in Ahmedabad, as part of the state’s expanding metro network and the national Make in India initiative. The metro coaches were officially launched by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel during his visit to Kolkata, at the Titagarh Rail Systems facility, ahead of their expected arrival in Ahmedabad.

Boosting Ahmedabad’s Urban Mobility

The new metro train is expected to significantly strengthen public transport in Ahmedabad, a city gearing up to host the Commonwealth 2030 Games. Currently, Ahmedabad Metro operates 32 trains with a total of 96 coaches, serving over 1.25 lakh passengers daily. The metro network connects key city hubs, including the Narendra Modi Stadium and the state capital Gandhinagar.

Make in India: A Milestone for Indigenous Metro Production

The newly launched train has been manufactured under India’s Make in India initiative at Titagarh Rail Systems Limited. Built with high-quality stainless steel and modern technologies, the train features world-class fire safety and advanced security systems. It is designed to operate as a fully automated driverless train under Grade of Automation 4 (GOA4).

Chief Minister Patel stated that the coaches will reflect Ahmedabad’s rich cultural heritage through vibrant colors and design motifs. The first of ten ordered trains for Phase-2 expansion will soon arrive in Ahmedabad after final testing and certification. The remaining nine trains will be gradually delivered over the next 5–6 months.

Phase-2 Expansion and Public Benefits

The Phase-2 extension of Ahmedabad Metro, spanning 21 kilometers, aims to meet the city’s growing demand for urban transport. Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (GMRCL) has confirmed that the new trains will help enhance operational capacity and improve passenger convenience. The metro system currently serves more than 1.6 lakh passengers daily, with annual growth rates of 30–40%.

Engineering and Technological Edge

During the inspection at Titagarh Rail Systems, Chief Minister Patel interacted with senior engineers to understand the train’s key features. The next-generation metro coaches are designed for superior maneuverability, safety, and passenger comfort. Titagarh Rail Systems, with production facilities in Pune, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Surat, and Ahmedabad, also manufactures Vande Bharat sleeper trains and other metro trains for Indian cities.

Looking Ahead

With the introduction of the first indigenous metro train, Ahmedabad is set to further strengthen its public transport network, support sustainable urban mobility, and showcase India’s self-reliance in modern rail technology. Gujarat also plans to expand metro operations to Surat in the coming years, emphasizing the state’s commitment to high-quality, technologically advanced urban infrastructure.
