Ahmedabad: The Gujarat government has announced plans to deploy more than 100 high-performance Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to expand access to advanced computing infrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI). The initiative aims to support startups, educational institutions, and government departments in building scalable AI solutions.
Initiative Led by Gujarat Informatics Limited
The project is being spearheaded by Gujarat Informatics Limited under the state’s Science and Technology Department. It follows discussions held during the “AI Startup Samvad” and aligns with Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s vision of technology-driven and citizen-centric governance.
Backed by IndiaAI Mission
The initiative is part of the Central government’s IndiaAI Mission, which focuses on democratizing access to high-end computing resources. Under this mission, Gujarat is operationalising shared AI infrastructure that will enable:
- AI model training
- Application development
- Deployment of scalable AI solutions
This shared system is expected to reduce the cost and time required for organizations to procure expensive computing systems.
Benefits for Startups and Institutions
Officials highlighted that the GPU-based infrastructure will significantly accelerate AI innovation by:
- Lowering entry barriers for startups and researchers
- Enabling faster development cycles
- Supporting deployment of AI solutions in governance and industry
The initiative is also expected to encourage the creation of locally relevant AI applications tailored to public service delivery and industrial needs.
AI Startup Samvad Drives Collaboration
The announcement builds on the “AI Startup Samvad” held in Gandhinagar, where the Chief Minister interacted with around two dozen high-potential startups from across India. The event aimed to identify scalable AI innovations and strengthen Gujarat’s position in emerging technologies.
During the interaction, CM Patel emphasized the importance of AI in improving transparency, governance efficiency, and citizen services, while also highlighting the role of startups in sectors like healthcare, education, and manufacturing.
Building a Strong AI Ecosystem
In recent years, Gujarat has taken several steps to strengthen its AI ecosystem, including:
- Establishing centres of excellence
- Supporting startup-led innovation challenges
- Partnering with industry to develop AI clusters and research infrastructure
Gujarat’s Vision as an AI Hub
The new GPU-backed infrastructure is expected to support a wide range of AI activities, from research and development to large-scale deployment.
With this initiative, the state aims to position itself as a national hub for artificial intelligence, innovation, and digital governance—offering coordinated support to startups, academia, and industry.
