Surat: Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has approved road infrastructure projects worth ₹1185 crore in the Surat Economic Region (SER) to accelerate regional development under the vision of “Viksit Gujarat @2047.”
The projects will upgrade 383 kilometers of roads across 24 road works, improving connectivity in southern Gujarat and strengthening logistics, industry, agriculture transportation, tourism, and employment opportunities.
Long-Term Development Roadmap Under GRIT
To ensure balanced and long-term development across the state, the Gujarat government has established the Gujarat State Institution for Transformation (GRIT).
The institution has been tasked with preparing a long-term development roadmap focused on infrastructure, innovation, capacity building, and institutional strengthening. Under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, GRIT has proposed the development of six major regional growth hubs across the state.
As part of this plan, the Surat Economic Region has been identified as the growth hub for southern Gujarat.
Surat Economic Region: Key Driver of Gujarat’s Economy
The Surat Economic Region includes six districts of southern Gujarat:
- Surat
- Bharuch
- Navsari
- Valsad
- Tapi
- Dang
This region contributes more than 35% to Gujarat’s economy and is considered one of the state’s most important industrial and economic hubs.
383 Km Road Upgrade to Improve Connectivity
Under the economic master plan for SER, the Gujarat government has approved 24 road projects covering 383 km in districts including Surat, Tapi, Valsad, Bharuch, and Navsari.
The road upgrades are expected to significantly improve transportation efficiency and strengthen connectivity between industrial areas, ports, and agricultural regions.
Logistics and Industrial Growth to Get Major Boost
Improved road infrastructure will enhance connectivity between industrial clusters and GIDC industrial estates, enabling faster movement of goods and workers.
Key industries expected to benefit include:
- Textile industry
- Diamond sector
- Chemical and petrochemical industries
- Logistics and manufacturing sectors
Better connectivity will also support industrial areas such as Kadod, Kadodara, Jolva, Mangrol, Kosamba, and Tadkeshwar, encouraging further industrial expansion.
Support for Ports, Fisheries and Dairy Sector
The improved road network will also benefit major economic activities and industries in southern Gujarat, including:
- Fisheries sector
- Hazira port operations
- Sugar factories
- Sumul Dairy
- Papad industry
- Mining and lignite projects
Efficient transportation will help businesses move raw materials and finished goods more quickly and reduce logistics costs.
Better Transport for Agricultural Produce
Farmers across southern Gujarat are also expected to benefit from the upgraded road network.
Improved connectivity will help agricultural produce reach markets faster, reducing transport time and increasing the chances of farmers receiving better prices for their crops.
Tourism Development in South Gujarat
The road projects will also enhance access to important religious and tourist destinations in the region, including:
- Siddhnath Mahadev Temple
- Shabari Dham
- Pandav Cave
- Anjanikund
- Sanjan Parsi Agiary
Better connectivity will also promote tourism in hill stations such as Saputara and Wilson Hills, along with other eco-tourism destinations.
New Employment Opportunities for Youth
The Surat Economic Region is already a strong hub for diamond, textile, chemical, and petrochemical industries.
With improved infrastructure, emerging sectors such as semiconductors, green hydrogen, and logistics are expected to attract new investments. This could generate large-scale employment opportunities for youth in the region.
Surat Economic Region to Become Growth Engine for Viksit Gujarat 2047
The Gujarat government aims to make the Surat Economic Region a strategic growth engine for the “Viksit Gujarat @2047” vision, which aligns with the national vision of Narendra Modi’s “Viksit Bharat @2047.”
Officials believe that by 2047, the region will play a key role in helping Gujarat achieve a $3.5 trillion economy while continuing to contribute over 35% to the state’s GSDP.
