Indian Masterminds Stories

Gandhinagar: Gujarat State Seed Corporation, a key player in the agricultural sector, has experienced significant growth in seed production and distribution, helping drive the state’s agricultural development. With a vision to enhance farmers’ incomes, the corporation has made strides in ensuring the availability of high-quality, certified seeds to farmers, even in the most remote areas.

Key Achievements in Seed Production and Distribution:

Production Growth: The Seed Corporation’s certified seed production reached 3.68 lakh quintals in 2024–25, marking an impressive increase of 1.30 lakh quintals over two years. This milestone is part of a broader strategy to produce 3.75 lakh quintals in 2025–26 and distribute more than 4 lakh quintals annually by 2030.

Seed Distribution Expansion: In the year 2024–25, around 2.97 lakh quintals of seeds were distributed, up from 2.49 lakh quintals in 2022–23. The ongoing growth reflects both the expanding production capacity and the growing demand for quality seeds.

Varietal Range: The corporation produces more than 125 varieties across 24 major crops, including wheat, paddy, groundnut, soybean, gram, moong, and cumin, ensuring a diverse range of seeds suitable for various agro-climatic conditions.

Minister Raghavji Patel on Seed Corporation’s Success

Agriculture Minister Raghavji Patel highlighted that the Seed Corporation’s success is a result of strategic leadership and collaborative efforts. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the production and distribution of certified seeds have grown substantially. Patel expressed optimism about reaching the target of 4 lakh quintals of annual seed distribution by 2030.

The steady increase in both production and distribution of seeds in the past two years highlights the resilience and growth of the Seed Corporation. Our focus is on providing quality seeds at reasonable prices to farmers, which directly translates into improved agricultural productivity,” said Minister Patel.

Quality Assurance and Availability for Farmers

Scientific Monitoring and Certification: The corporation collaborates with progressive farmers to produce certified seeds. The entire production process—ranging from sowing to harvesting, processing, and packaging—is monitored for quality assurance. Seeds undergo certification by authorized agencies to ensure genetic purity, germination capacity, and physical purity.

Wide Distribution Network: The corporation utilizes a vast network of 1,289 authorized seed dealers, including 401 cooperative institutions, 367 agri-clinics, and 521 private institutions, to ensure farmers across Gujarat have easy access to quality seeds. This extensive distribution network ensures that farmers, even in remote villages, can acquire seeds at reasonable prices.

Boosting Agricultural Research and Innovation

The Seed Corporation places a strong emphasis on the promotion of agricultural research by prioritizing the production of newly recommended seed varieties developed by agricultural universities and research institutions. This approach helps:

  • Increase the Varietal Replacement Rate (VRR) and Seed Replacement Ratio (SRR)
  • Ensure higher-yielding, disease-resistant varieties reach farmers faster
  • Improve overall agricultural productivity across the state

Looking Ahead: A Vision for the Future

With its ambitious goals for the future, Gujarat State Seed Corporation is poised to play a critical role in the state’s agricultural transformation. By focusing on innovative seed production, affordable distribution, and scientifically backed quality assurance, the Corporation is set to significantly contribute to the growth and sustainability of Gujarat’s farming community.
