Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has announced a significant initiative aimed at providing relief to millions of farmers across the state. During the Energy Department Question Hour in the State Assembly, Energy Minister Rishikesh Patel revealed that the government is seriously working on a plan to replace the current two-shift electricity system with continuous single-shift electricity supply for farmers.
This move is expected to streamline irrigation and agricultural operations, saving farmers both time and effort while enhancing efficiency in farming activities.
Current Two-Shift Electricity System Creates Challenges for Farmers
At present, farmers in Gujarat receive electricity for irrigation in two separate shifts, which often forces them to work late at night or at irregular hours. This system has long been a source of inconvenience and disruption for farmers, making routine agricultural work challenging and sometimes unsafe.
Switching to a single, continuous electricity shift will allow farmers to manage irrigation and other farming tasks more effectively and safely, eliminating the need for night-time or irregular work.

Energy Department Exploring Technical and Administrative Solutions
Energy Minister Rishikesh Patel stated that the Energy Department is evaluating various technical and administrative options to implement the new system. The government is considering infrastructure upgrades, modern metering systems, and grid management solutions to ensure a smooth transition from two-shift to single-shift electricity supply.
Direct Benefits to Farmers and Rural Households
Once implemented, this plan is expected to directly benefit millions of farming families in Gujarat. By ensuring continuous electricity in a single shift, farmers can:
- Carry out irrigation and fieldwork at convenient times
- Reduce fatigue and improve work safety
- Optimize water usage and farming efficiency
The government is currently assessing the required infrastructure and technical feasibility, and a detailed announcement regarding implementation is expected soon.
A Major Step Towards Agricultural Relief and Efficiency
This proposed reform is being widely seen as a major relief measure for farmers, demonstrating the government’s commitment to supporting the agricultural sector. By addressing one of the long-standing challenges faced by farmers, the initiative will strengthen sustainable farming practices and contribute to better crop management and rural livelihoods in Gujarat.
