CHANDIGARH: Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Y. Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer of the Haryana cadre, committed suicide on Tuesday, October 7th, at his residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh. The officer, who had recently been transferred, shot himself in the head with his personal security officer’s (PSO) service revolver.
Police recovered a detailed eight-page suicide note and a one-page will from the scene, which have immediately thrust the case into a complex and high-stakes investigation.
An investigation into the suicide of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar has revealed a significant detail: the will and the eight-page suicide note were dated for two consecutive days. The will is dated October 6, while the suicide note is dated October 7. The IPS officer signed both documents using the same green pen, a detail which is now under forensic scrutiny.
Key Accusations and Official Investigation
Suicide Note Names Senior Officers
The recovered suicide note, written in English, reportedly names seven to eight IPS officers and two IAS officers, accusing them of harassment. This revelation suggests significant internal pressures and inter-departmental conflict as a potential motive for the extreme step. The case has sent shockwaves through the entire police establishment, with many officers remaining tight-lipped.
Bribery Allegations and PSO’s Arrest
The suicide appears to be closely linked to a recent corruption case. Just a day prior, an FIR was filed against the deceased officer’s security guard, Head Constable Sushil Kumar, at the Urban Estate police station in Rohtak.
Contractor’s Complaint: Liquor contractor Praveen Bansal had filed a complaint accusing Sushil Kumar of demanding a monthly bribe of ₹2.5 lakh. Bansal also provided an audio clip as evidence.
PSO Arrested: Sushil Kumar, who had been unofficially with ADGP Puran Kumar for about five years despite being officially posted in Narnaul, was arrested and remanded to 14-day judicial custody.
The Link: During interrogation, the arrested PSO reportedly named ADGP Y. Puran Kumar. While the Rohtak SP, Narendra Bijarnia, confirmed no notice had yet been issued to the ADGP, the timing of the arrest and the suicide is highly suggestive.
Suspicion Over Documents and Missing Laptop
Forensic Scan on Note and Will
Investigators have noted a crucial detail that is now a focus of the probe: the will is dated October 6th, and the suicide note is dated October 7th. Both were signed by the officer using a green pen. The police are pursuing the line of inquiry that the officer had “thoroughly planned his suicide,” but the use of two different dates has raised suspicion that an attempt may have been made to misdirect the investigation.
The handwriting, ink, and timing of both documents are undergoing a rigorous forensic examination.
Clash at the Scene and Missing Device
During the search of the Kothi No. 116, an argument reportedly broke out between the police team and a relative of the deceased officer, identified as a current MLA from Punjab’s Bathinda.
Furthermore, the deceased officer’s personal laptop was not found at the house; only a laptop claimed by his daughter was recovered. Several high-ranking officials, including retired Punjab DGP Sahota, visited the scene.
The Last Hours and Career Overview
Daughter Discovers Body, Calls MLA Uncle
The ADGP’s daughter, who was at a friend’s house, was the first to return home and discover her father, covered in blood, on the sofa. She immediately called her uncle, the Punjab MLA, who then informed the police around 1:30 PM. The officer’s wife, Amneet P. Kumar, was contacted by phone and reportedly denied any domestic dispute.
Transfer and Brief Rohtak Tenure
Y. Puran Kumar, originally from Andhra Pradesh, was recently transferred from his position as IG of the Rohtak Range on September 29th and assigned as IG of the Sunaria Police Training College. His tenure in Rohtak had been brief, spanning from April to September. Colleagues, though shocked by his sudden death, described him as a “very friendly person.”
