Rohtak, Haryana: Tensions are running high in Haryana’s Rohtak district as the family of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sandeep Kumar Lather, who died by suicide on October 15, has refused to cremate his body until IAS officer Amneet Puran Kumar (2001 batch), the wife of late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar (2001 batch), is arrested.
Sandeep’s family has taken the deceased officer’s body to their native village and is holding firm on their demand, saying “we will perform the last rites only after Amneet is behind bars.”
Family Alleges Harassment After Arrest of Gunman
According to the family, ASI Sandeep Kumar had faced intense harassment after arresting the gunman of late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar in an alleged bribery case. Sandeep reportedly confided in relatives just two days before his death, claiming he was under immense pressure.
“Our brother is a martyr who stood against corruption, like Bhagat Singh stood against the British,” said cousin Shishpal Lathar. “The government should investigate Puran Kumar’s assets, worth ₹2,000–3,000 crore,” he alleged.
The family also revealed that they learned of Sandeep’s death through television news. “After seeing his photo, we turned the TV off. He served in Rohtak for 5–6 years. His father was also in the police, and his grandfather fought in the 1965 war,” added Shishpal.
Sandeep is survived by his wife, mother, a seven-year-old son, and two daughters.
Suicide Note and Video Message Target Late IPS Officer
ASI Sandeep Kumar’s body was discovered near a tubewell along the Rohtak–Panipat road. Authorities recovered a three-page suicide note and a video message, in which he levelled serious allegations against the late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, calling him corrupt and accusing him of creating a toxic, caste-driven work environment.
“The day he was posted, he started playing caste politics, removing honest officers, and appointing corrupt people. There were even cases of molestation against women officers,” Sandeep said in his video.
He also claimed he was being framed in a bribery case and ended his life to demand an impartial probe.
Police Response and Ongoing Probe
Rohtak SP Surendra Singh Bhoria described Sandeep as a “hardworking and honest officer” and confirmed that a forensic team has been deployed. “An investigation is being conducted,” he said.
The ASI’s death adds a fresh layer of complexity to the ongoing probe into the October 7 suicide of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who left behind a nine-page suicide note accusing eight senior police officers of harassment and caste-based discrimination.
In the aftermath, his wife, IAS officer Amneet Puran Kumar, filed a formal complaint naming 13 senior officials under charges including abetment of suicide and violations of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
A Crisis Deepens in Haryana Police Force
With two suicides within days, both surrounded by allegations of harassment, caste bias, and systemic corruption, the Haryana police force is now facing serious public scrutiny and calls for accountability.
The demand for arresting Amneet Puran Kumar puts the state government in a delicate position, as her complaint is central to the case against senior IPS officers – but now she herself faces allegations tied to a retaliatory suicide.
Both incidents underscore the urgent need for –
- Transparent investigation processes
- Protection for whistleblowers
- Mental health and grievance redressal mechanisms within law enforcement
