Nemra, Ramgarh: Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren visited his ancestral village Nemra on Thursday to pay homage to his grandfather, martyr Sobran Soren, on his death anniversary. The CM performed floral tributes at the statue of Sobran Soren in Lukaiyatand and addressed a gathering of local residents, reflecting on the sacrifices of Jharkhand’s brave forefathers.
Honoring a Legacy of Struggle
During the public address, CM Soren described Jharkhand as a land nurtured through struggle and resistance. He said, “Jharkhand is a land soaked in the blood of its martyrs. For centuries, our people have fought against exploitation and oppression. The sacrifices of our brave ancestors have instilled in us the courage to fight for our rights.”
He emphasized that the memories, statues, and memorials of martyrs across the state serve as constant reminders of justice and perseverance. Today, he added, the state honors his grandfather, Sobran Soren, whose martyrdom continues to inspire Jharkhandis to stand firm in the fight for justice.
Sobran Soren’s Contribution
CM Soren highlighted his grandfather’s dedication to education and social empowerment despite facing adversities. Sobran Soren, a skilled teacher, believed that education was the key to social revolution and building a prosperous society. He devoted his life to educating the oppressed and marginalized, creating a legacy of learning alongside resistance.
Remembering the Martyrdom
Sobran Soren was assassinated on 27 November 1957 near Lukaiyatand village, while carrying food and supplies for his two sons, Rajaram Soren and Shibu Soren, who were residing in a school hostel at Gola block headquarters. His murder occurred because he raised his voice against usurers and exploitative moneylenders, a practice rampant at the time. Following his death, his son Shibu Soren launched a vigorous movement against the mahajani and usury system, continuing Sobran Soren’s fight for justice.
Reflections on Jharkhand’s Journey
Speaking on the occasion, CM Hemant Soren also reflected on Jharkhand’s 25-year journey since its formation, noting that the state has grown into a vibrant, youthful region. He affirmed that the government is working swiftly across sectors and remains committed to empowering the youth through various developmental initiatives.
The tribute to Sobran Soren highlighted the enduring spirit of Jharkhand’s martyrs, combining struggle, education, and social justice as guiding principles for the state’s present and future.
