The district-level Independence Day celebrations in Shimla, held at the iconic Ridge ground, became unforgettable this year. While the parade, tricolour hoisting, and cultural performances were the official highlights, it was the spirited dance of 92-year-old former Director General of Police (DGP) Mr. Ratti Ram Verma to the traditional Himachali folk dance Naati that captured everyone’s heart.
When the artists began singing Naati, Mr. Verma, seated among the audience, stood up and joined the performers with remarkable enthusiasm. His confident steps and joyful expressions mesmerized the gathering, drawing thunderous applause. Within minutes, videos of his performance went viral on social media, turning the moment into an inspiring story of passion, patriotism, and vitality.
Presence of Leaders and Enthusiastic Audience
The event was presided over by Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Mukesh Agnihotri, who, along with ministers, senior officers, and citizens, witnessed the extraordinary moment. The audience was struck by the sight of the 92-year-old retired officer matching steps with folk artists. Many remarked that true youth lies in spirit, and Mr. Verma’s act reflected both enthusiasm and a deep sense of patriotism.
A Life Dedicated to Service and Society
Mr. Verma, a native of Theog, has long been known as one of the most honest and hardworking police officers of Himachal Pradesh. During the 1990s, when Mr. Virbhadra Singh was Chief Minister, he served as the DGP and earned a reputation as a trusted and efficient officer. Later, he also held the position of Chairman of the Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission.
In 2011, he was conferred the Policeman of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Award, further cementing his legacy as a symbol of efficiency, integrity, and discipline in the police force.
Continuing Contributions After Retirement
Mr. Verma remains remarkably active even today. He regularly walks on Mall Road, meets acquaintances at the Indian Coffee House, and inspires the younger generation with his fitness. A few years ago, he participated in a 3 km mini-marathon organized against drug abuse, urging youth to stay away from drugs and dedicate themselves to education and sports.
His social commitment extends beyond words. In 2023, during the devastating monsoon disaster in Himachal Pradesh, he pledged Rs. 10,000 per month from his pension to the Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund. He contributed consistently for a year, showcasing that service to society transcends age and official position.
Symbol of Inspiration for Generations
The Independence Day celebrations highlighted more than patriotism—it celebrated the enduring spirit of service and resilience embodied by Mr. Verma. His life continues to stand as an inspiration, proving that honesty, fitness, and responsibility towards society can leave a legacy far beyond one’s years in uniform.
