Lucknow: In a significant development that marks a high point for the Uttar Pradesh cadre of the Indian Police Service (IPS), Sanjay Singhal, a 1993-batch IPS officer, has been appointed as the Director General (DG) of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). With this elevation, five IPS officers from the UP cadre now head some of the most prominent central armed and elite security forces in India — a rare and prestigious feat.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) officially approved Singhal’s appointment on Tuesday. Currently serving as Special Director General in the Border Security Force (BSF), he will take charge as DG, SSB on September 1, 2025, after the retirement of incumbent Amrit Mohan Prasad (IPS: 1989: Odisha cadre) on August 31, 2025. Singhal is slated to serve until December 31, 2028, or until further orders.
UP IPS Officers in Top Command: A Proud Moment
With Singhal’s appointment, Uttar Pradesh’s IPS cadre now leads five critical central forces-
- Safi Ehsan Rizvi – DG, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)
- Daljeet Chaudhary – DG, Border Security Force (BSF)
- Alok Sharma – DG, Special Protection Group (SPG)
- Piyush Anand – DG, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)
- Sanjay Singhal – DG-designate, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)
This unprecedented representation reflects both depth of talent and administrative excellence within the UP cadre, earning widespread appreciation across the security establishment.
A Career Built on Operational Strength and Integrity
Sanjay Singhal is known for his professional acumen, integrity, and operational command. He has had a distinguished career in both central and state postings:
Served with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) from 2008 to 2015 as DIG and IG, overseeing border operations along the India-China frontier.
Held key roles in Uttar Pradesh as IG, GSO to DGP, ADG Crime, ADG Railways, and ADG Establishment.
Commanded several Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) battalions and was Superintendent of Police in various sensitive districts.
He is a recipient of the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, reflecting the nation’s recognition of his contributions.
Recognition and Reflections
Former UP DGP Vikram Singh, speaking on the development, called this a “moment of immense pride” for Uttar Pradesh and the IPS community at large.
“It’s after many years that five officers from the same cadre are entrusted with national-level security leadership. It highlights the professionalism, discipline, and administrative strength of the UP cadre,” he said.
A senior officer added that Singhal’s appointment comes at a strategically important time, especially given the SSB’s responsibilities along the India-Nepal and India-Bhutan borders, which have growing geopolitical significance.
Looking Ahead
As the new DG of SSB, Singhal will be expected to drive border vigilance, anti-smuggling operations, and civil outreach initiatives in challenging terrains. His experience with ITBP and BSF is expected to be a major asset in modernizing the force and enhancing coordination with local and international stakeholders.
