Gerukamukh, Arunachal Pradesh/Assam — In a significant development for India’s hydroelectric sector, NHPC Limited successfully lowered the generator stator of Unit-5 into its designated position at the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project on August 8. This milestone marks a critical step toward the early commissioning of one of India’s largest and most ambitious renewable energy projects.
The generator stator, weighing an impressive 395 tonnes with a bore diameter of 11.5 meters, is the largest of its kind ever installed in any Indian hydroelectric project. Its precise placement required high-level engineering expertise and meticulous coordination between NHPC and GE Vernova, the firm responsible for the electro-mechanical works.

Leadership Presence and Technical Collaboration
The landmark achievement was celebrated virtually by NHPC’s senior leadership. CMD Mr. Rajendra Prasad Goyal, along with Director (Personnel) Mr. Uttam Lal, Director (Projects) Mr. Sanjay Kumar Singh, Director (Technical) Mr. Suprakash Adhikari, and CVO Mr. Santosh Kumar, joined the event from NHPC’s corporate office, underlining the national significance of the milestone.
At the project site, the occasion was witnessed by the Executive Director & Head of Project (HOP), senior project engineers, and representatives from M/s GE Vernova. The successful lowering of the stator highlights the effective collaboration between NHPC and GE Vernova in driving progress toward early power generation.
Commissioning Timeline and Energy Contribution
Speaking on the achievement, CMD Mr. Rajendra Prasad Goyal congratulated the entire Subansiri team and praised the coordination with M/s GE Vernova. He noted that this milestone is a “pivotal step” toward the early commissioning of five units (totaling 1,250 MW) out of the project’s eight units, each with a capacity of 250 MW.
Located near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project is a run-of-river scheme on the Subansiri River. Once fully operational, the project is expected to generate around 7,421.59 million units of electricity annually, significantly boosting the power supply to India’s northeastern and eastern regions.
A Boost to India’s Clean Energy Mission
The Subansiri project is poised to become a cornerstone of India’s renewable energy infrastructure, contributing to national goals for sustainable development and energy security. Its strategic location, massive capacity, and clean energy output make it a flagship initiative in India’s hydroelectric portfolio.
With Unit-5’s stator successfully in place, NHPC continues its march toward full commissioning — bringing the country one step closer to affordable, clean, and reliable energy for millions.
