Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh: The 2020 batch IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, Mr Abhinav Gopal, currently serving as the Chief Development Officer (CDO) of Ghaziabad, has made waves – literally and figuratively – by swimming across the English Channel, one of the world’s most dangerous and challenging sea routes.
He completed the expedition in 11 hours and 19 minutes on June 18, setting an inspirational benchmark for youth and civil servants alike.
A Feat Across the Mighty Channel
The English Channel, a treacherous stretch of water separating southern England from northern France, is known for strong currents, frigid temperatures, and busy maritime traffic. Gopal and his team swam from England to France, a route that, while just 33 km in straight line, turned into nearly 55 km due to strong sea currents.
Speaking about the feat, Mr Gopal said, “The water was bone-chilling. The biggest challenge was mental endurance. I kept chanting the name of Lord Ram throughout.”

- Ishant Singh – Haryana
Together, they braved shark zones, jellyfish stings, and the risk of hypothermia to cross one of the world’s busiest sea routes.
